Conquering the Stigma of Mental Illness One Story at a Time

from Dr. Carole's Couch · host Dr. Carole Lieberman

When you hear the word schizophrenia you probably think of a homeless person or a character in the movie Cuckoo's Nest. Well, get ready for your stereotype to be turned on its ear. Today's guest, Mindy Tsai, has been diagnosed as schizophrenic, and also has a masters degree from an Ivy League university, and a top job in a digital health firm, as well as friends and a charming personality. And she's the author of a just-released memoir, Becoming Whole. In 2004, Mindy began hearing a voice in her head, someone she called Joe. She found signs everywhere that seemed to hold mysterious clues meant only for her. What she didn't know at the time was that she was experiencing her first schizophrenic episode. For the next decade, she oscillated between two worlds - a normal life and a secret voice-filled one -- until she began the journey of merging her two worlds back into one. Today, she takes you on her journey and hopes that her story will help end the stigma of mental illness.
