Seit 5 Jahren gibt es das Projekt Containerlab. Ursprünglich von Nokia gestartet, hat es eine wachsende Community aus dem Netzwerk- und Rechenzentrumsbetrieb. Mit Containerlab lassen sich Netzwerkinfrastrukturen unterschiedlichster Größen ressourcensparend in Linux-Containern simulieren. Aktuelle Router-Hardware nutzt heutzutage oft den Linux-Kernel, sodass es von den Herstellern die Firmware als Container-Image gibt. Gleichzeitig lassen sich auch »normale« Linux-Container und VMs in Containerlab nutzen. Virtuelle Maschinen kommen immer dann zum Tragen, wenn die Router/Switch-Firmware nicht auf Linux basiert.
