“Continuous Walking, Deep Rooting”
from "Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today · host Y.E.S. Jesus Youth Encountering Savior Jesus
Sept. 1, 2026 Daily Devotional: “Continuous Walking, Deep Rooting”Colossians 2:6-7 (ESV) "Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving." It is easy to view salvation as a single, past event—a moment where you accepted grace and crossed a finish line. However, the Apostle Paul uses dynamic, ongoing imagery to show that receiving Christ is actually the starting line of a daily journey. Notice the shift in tenses in this passage: you received Him is in past tense, so now walk in Him is in present continuous tense. Faith is not a static stance; it is a movement. Paul illustrates this spiritualtrajectory through distinct visual pictures of lifestyle. The momentum of daily choices, thoughts, and actions aligning with Jesus’ character rather than changing culture. Being rooted in Him like a tree anchoring into nutrient-rich soil, your hidden life in prayer and the Word feeds your spiritual endurance during dry seasons. We are built up in Him, laying line upon line of truth, constructing your worldview on the unchanging foundation of Christ. We Abound in thanksgiving as an overflowing grateful heart serves, this is the ultimate test of healthy roots—it proves your soul is drawing joy from God rather than external circumstances. When winds of doubt, anxiety, or hardship blow, a tree doesn't survive because of its leaves; it survives because of its unseen roots. To walk steadily today, go deep into the One who grounds you. At its core, Colossians 2:6–7 is a mandate on how to live out authentic Christianity: the same way you received Jesus for salvation is the same way you must continue to live your life every day—by grace through faith in Him. You do not begin your faith journey resting on Christ's work and then try to maintain it through your own willpower or complex rules. You grow in the Christian life the exact same way you entered it: by trusting Jesus, drawing life from Him, and letting gratitude for His grace power your everyday walk. In what area of your life are you relying on old spiritual growth rather than actively "walking" in Christ today? What daily practice can you incorporate this week to sink your roots deeper into His Word?
