Conversation with Aapo Nikkanen

Aapo Nikkanen is one of the artists from the One-To-One program in 2025. and in this episode he is talking to Jerko about his work and experience.Aapo is an artist, researcher, and hypnotherapist. His current work focuses on hypnotic performances and photography. In 2024, he earned a hypnotherapist’s degree, and he runs a hypnotherapy cabinet in Paris. Alongside his artistic practice, Nikkanen researches and periodically writes about new technologies. He teaches and gives workshops in art and design universities across Europe, and occassionally does design commissions and collaborations. In Joy Machines, the project that he has presented in One-To-One project, the audience is hypnotised and comes into contact with a machine that can produce intense sensory experiences of happiness. The work reflects on our increasingly complex – and not necessarily healthy – relationship with new technologies.This podcast is a part of One-to-One Art project, which has been awarded Creative Europe funding for the period 1 November 2023 – 30 September 2026.Project coordinator is ILME (Oulu, Finland) and partners in the project are the Gato Escaldado theatre group from Lisbon, Portugal, and the artist residency House of Klajn ran by House Collective from Klanjec, Croatia.
