Conversations with Kim: Guest Erin Part 2 - Ep #15

from Intuitive Insights · host Kimberly Beam

On today’s episode, we continue the conversation with Erin who is the direct services supervisor of victim services of Montgomery County. Erin steps back and remembers how she got interested in social work.  It all started when she had a school assignment of interviewing a friend’s mom who was a social worker.  She just always knew that is what she wanted to do.  Erin chose victim services after having her own interaction with a Philadelphia victim's services agency.  She became enthralled with that kind of work.  An advocate job came open a few months later and Erin applied, and the rest is history. Erin does very well with a lot on her plate.  She enjoys finding ways to help when it seems like everything is stacked up against them.  Erin is always up to the challenge of finding the answers and resources in the community to help. There is never the same situation. There’s a profound feeling of hopelessness whenever there's a response from the criminal justice world that isn’t what is expected.  It is their job to support the client no matter what, but not hearing the outcome you were hoping for makes it difficult. Supporting the client means putting your own personal baggage on the shelf now while you are supporting them and their needs.  After supporting the client when the day is done, Erin shares how she personally deals with her day and emotions so she can be ready for the next day. Erin dives into areas that she has seen that are systematically broken.  Sexual assault is one of the least reported crimes.  Meaningful language access is another challenge that victims must overcome.  Despite all the challenges, Erin loves finding ways to make miracles happen. Victim Services is available to anyone that may or think they may need it.  All you need to do is say that you need help.If you need support google victim services in your county or RAINNDont forget to  subscribe to our podcast and share it with your friends and family.
