Coping with Hair Loss and Alopecia with Autoimmune Diseases - Special Guest Heather Knox

from Invisible Strength · host Karin Wagner and Chris Burton

Welcome back to the Invigorate podcast, where we dive into the realities of living with autoimmune diseases and explore ways to cope with ongoing challenges. Join hosts Chris and Karin, along with special guest Heather Knox, as they delve into the topic of alopecia in today's episode. Often misunderstood as solely hair loss, alopecia is actually connected to autoimmune disease and chronic illness. Conditions such as psoriasis, thyroid disease, diabetes, lupus, and vitiligo also increase the risk of alopecia. Furthermore, medications for autoimmune diseases can contribute to hair thinning and loss. Alopecia areata is the medical term for hair loss or baldness, characterized by its occurrence in small, random areas. The immune system mistakenly treats hair follicles and nails as foreign bodies. Fluctuating between flare-ups and periods of remission, alopecia can be an unpredictable journey. While some individuals can wait out the symptoms, others may seek longer-term solutions. Karin shares her experience using methylfolate, a B vitamin prescribed by her rheumatologist, which has primarily halted her hair loss. However, regrowth is still awaited. Dermatologists offer various treatment options for alopecia, including corticosteroids, minoxidil, phototherapy, and topical immunotherapy. It's worth noting that dermatologists specialize in the skin and provide hair and nail care expertise. For those whose bodies do not respond to conventional treatments, alternative options like certain hairstyles, wigs, and weaves can become part of their style repertoire. However, it's crucial to consider potential interactions between these treatments and medications. Stress and lifestyle factors can contribute to hair loss and other autoimmune disease symptoms. Taking care of ourselves internally and externally is essential during flares and beyond. Implementing strategies like wearing sunglasses, covering the head, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein can strengthen hair. Heather shares her personal journey of shaving her head and offers tips on feeling more confident with a shaved head, such as wearing fun glasses, playing with makeup, and accessorizing with jewelry. The podcast also explores the world of wigs, hair extensions, and alternative options. Losing hair can profoundly impact one's identity and evoke grief, but it's important to remember that you are not alone on this journey. The Invigorate podcast aims to share information, tell stories, and strengthen the autoimmune community. Embrace who you are in this season of life. Take care of yourselves! In that moment Dr. Bhagat crossed the threshold from being a physician to a frightened mother desperate to protect and save her child, and was moved to create Physician-Parent Caregivers (PPC), a non-profit to protect young people with chronic health conditions and their families. Lewis’s marvelous book The Last Battle, which is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia. It is a remarkable book on multiple levels and was awarded the Carnegie Medal back in the 1950s when it was first published. The Last Battle has some themes in common with The Great Divorce and That Hideous Strength that will make it an excellent follow-up to those two books, and like them, it has some remarkable resonance with things going on in today’s culture. It is a book that is both theologically rich and poignantly beautiful in its writing, and it can help equip us to live boldly for Christ in a culture that has lost its way. (Although this book is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia, it can stand on its own and it is not necessary to have read the other books for this class.)
