Summary
University of Miami Marine Science researchers in the laboratory of Dr. Nikki Traylor-Knowles are using science to learn how and why certain corals are resisting "bleaching." Their research indicates that a coral's immune system might play a key role in understanding coral resilience, placing this emerging field of study at the forefront of climate change and health. However, there is still much to be learned from the corals... so long as their defenses can protect them from bleaching before we have the chance. This episode was created as part of conceptual podcast series called "Maritime Medicine." Description: The healing powers of the ocean are undeniable. However, as the ocean provides for life on Earth, it's become clear that one species is not reciprocating. This podcast is about ways in which people and seas impact each other via stories about health-related happenings in the marine ecosystem. By celebrating the various ways that oceans provide sustenance, Maritime Medicine aims inspire marine stewardship so that our impact on the ocean's health turns a tide and becomes at least as positive as its impact on ours.
