This study turns to the prayer of John 17 , Jesus praying in his final hours rather than the more familiar pattern prayer. The posture and timing matter: words spoken near death tend to carry only what is essential. Jesus prays first for himself to glorify the Father, then for his apostles, asking protection, joy, separation from the world, and sanctification by the word of truth, so that they would be one as he and the Father are one. The unity of that first community was essential to the gospel's spread. The prayer then widens to those who would believe through the apostles' message, which includes the church today. The application is unity understood not as mere agreement but as the credibility of the church's witness, expressed in laying down preferences for the sake of others.
