This message contrasts two kings. Saul, chosen for height and appearance, repeatedly disobeyed and is summed up by two words — but Saul — a life about his own kingdom, even raising a monument in his own honor. From 1 Samuel 16 , God sends Samuel to an obscure shepherd boy. The Lord does not look at appearance but at the heart. David — overlooked by Samuel, his father, his brothers, and Saul — was the king Israel needed: one after God's own heart who pointed people back to God. The application is kingdom-mindedness: don't let the naysayers in your life stop what God calls you to, and become a Jonathan — an encourager who invests in someone, making disciples per Matthew 28 . You are never too young or too old to advance God's kingdom rather than your own.
