Cornelius Grove - How Other Children Learn

from Tell Me Your Story · host Richard Dugan

https://www.howotherchildrenlearn.info/ How Other Children Learn explores how young children are raised and socialized in five pre-modern societies, ones in which schools either do not exist or have just started to arrive on the scene. The examples offered by these societies highlight contrasts between traditional and modern assumptions about children, which potentially enables us modern folks to reassess some of the beliefs and practices that have been guiding our parenting. For example, one of my principal findings is that children in traditional societies, even very young children, demonstrate that they are far more able and willing to contribute in practical ways to their family’s well-being (including taking on important responsibilities) than we modern people allow. Here’s a brief overview of the contents of How Other Children Learn: · Chapter 1: Background to the anthropology of childhood research field · Chapters 2–6: Child-rearing in five traditional societies explored in depth · Chapters 7–8: Resulting insights re parenting and children’s capabilities
