Courage, Human Spirit & Teddy Bears | Deb Richardson - 584

from Roll With The Punches · host Tiffanee Cook

In this episode which I originally recorded for The Code 9 Foundation podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Deb Richardson, a veteran of the Victoria Police. Deb's experiences and her story are nothing short of remarkable. As a young police officer in her early twenties, Deb was present during the Russell Street Bombing in Melbourne on March 27, 1986, which tragically claimed the life of her colleague, Constable Angela Taylor. In a stroke of luck and a detail that has remained a mystery, Deb was fortunate enough to survive. Recently, Deb played an instrumental role in changing legislation to ensure that the person responsible for the attack will never be released from prison. In another incredible turn of events, Deb fostered a young Ukrainian child named Yuri years ago. The circumstances surrounding their meeting were unbelievable, and Deb has since reunited with Yuri in the wake of the recent Ukraine conflict. This reunion inspired Deb to rally support and produce a large number of "Yuri Bears," which she delivered to Poland and Ukraine as a symbol of hope and human spirit. This conversation with Deb is one of my favorites, as she is a truly remarkable human being who has faced and overcome some terrifying obstacles.
