Courage in the Storm - Week 2a

from Eastview Baptist Church Teaching Podcast · host Eastview Baptist Church

“Courage in the Storm: Standing Strong in Times of Crisis” Title: Faith in the Fire                      Text: 1 Kings 18:20-46 Theme: True faith (faith by fire) trusts God to show up in impossible circumstances, calling us to bold prayer, unwavering confidence, and full surrender to His power. Big Idea: Faith that is tested in the fire (James 1:2-4) reveals the power and glory of the one true God. 2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,  whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.   Outline: I. Faith Confronts the False (1 Kings 18:20-24)      • Scripture: “Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.’ But the people said nothing.” (v. 21)      • Point: Elijah challenges the people to stop wavering and make a decision. True faith requires confronting the false gods in our lives and declaring our allegiance to the Lord.      • Application: What idols or distractions are competing for your heart? Faith calls us to confront and tear down the false gods of comfort, control, or culture. II. Faith Steps Out in Bold Obedience (1 Kings 18:25-29)      • Scripture: “Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. ‘Baal, answer us!’ they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered.” (v. 26)      • Point: The prophets of Baal put on a loud, desperate display, but nothing happened. Elijah trusted God’s instruction and stood alone in obedience. Faith isn’t about noise; it’s about quiet confidence in God’s Word.      • Application: Are you stepping out in obedience to what God has asked you to do, even if it feels like you’re standing alone? Bold obedience opens the door for God to work. III. Faith Prays with Expectation (1 Kings 18:30-40)      • Scripture: “At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: ‘LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant.’” (v. 36)      • Point: Elijah prayed a simple, powerful prayer, trusting God to respond. His faith wasn’t in his ability but in God’s character. God answered by sending fire from heaven, proving His power.      • Application: How is your prayer life? Faith prays boldly, expecting God to show up. When we pray with confidence in God’s power, He responds in ways that glorify Him. IV. Faith Perseveres Until the Promise Comes (1 Kings 18:41-46)      • Scripture: “Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees… ‘Go and look toward the sea,’ he told his servant. And he went up and looked. ‘There is nothing there,’ he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’” (v. 42-43)      • Point: After the fire fell, Elijah prayed again for rain. Though it didn’t come immediately, he persevered in faith, knowing God would fulfill His promise. The small cloud was the beginning of God’s provision.      • Application: Don’t give up when answers seem delayed. Persevere in prayer and faith, trusting that God’s promises will be fulfilled in His perfect timing.   Gospel Realization: Elijah’s faith points to Jesus, who faced the ultimate confrontation on the cross. Through His sacrifice, He destroyed the power of sin and idolatry, inviting us to live with bold, fire-tested faith in Him.  -              Just as God sent fire to affirm His presence on Mount Carmel, He sends His Spirit to empower us to live for His glory today.
