What are the 10 commandments and how do we 'use' them? They are most commonly  understood as a moral code, as a way to determine if you are good enough. But, If that is the case, it is a very faulty moral code! The problem is that we have failed to understand their intended purpose and design. The 10 commands were not given as a standard for evaluating one's individual goodness! Instead, the 10 commands are 10 principles explaining how the covenant community of God's people must live in order to show a watching world what Yahweh is like. The first 4 commands focus on who makes up the community of faith - namely those who have experienced His saving grace and consequently love God and seek to do what is pleasing to Him. The remaining commands/words are to be viewed as foundational principles that form the core values of their life together as God's people. These core values flow out of God’s very heart and character. Consequently, a community built on these values will display to the world the glory and character of God.
