The initiative was co-founded by Caribbean leaders, CARICOM, OECS, and joined by a group of visionary Caribbean governments now totaling 27; Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bonaire, British Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Panama, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St Vincent & The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and US Virgin Islands, international governments, business leaders, philanthropists, foundations, nonprofits, and large global organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Its ambitions and know-how are rooted in Caribbean insights from years of experience on the frontlines of climate impact, forging solutions that are workable, economically viable, and globally relevant. The central objective of the Accelerator is to help transform the Caribbean economy through fast-tracking sound public and private investment opportunities supporting climate action paired with economic growth. This will enable Caribbean countries to build resilient infrastructure and societies, create jobs and catalyze economic growth, accelerate broad-based socio-economic development, and advocate to ensure that the region stays at the top of the global agenda communicating a shared vision of opportunity. Within this landscape, the Accelerator plays a critical role in fast-tracking the region’s commitment to resilience and united climate action by creating collaboratives with a bias for action and supporting partners, implementers, and experts to avoid duplication. The Accelerator helps bring to bear the full power of the collective with the following value-added functions: 1) Convening and creating economies of scale to strengthen the ability of projects to attract resources and best practice; 2) Structuring, implementing, and fundraising for blended financial facilities to deliver new sources of capital and increase funding available for climate action across the region; 3) Applying innovation to the most difficult-to-solve challenges, working with technology developers and through collaboration with other accelerators; and 4) Engaging the private sector to execute through cross-sector partnerships and other mechanisms, further enabling national governments to focus on policy development.
