Creek War
from HistoryMaps Podcast
In this episode, we explore the complex causes and lasting consequences of the Creek War, a violent struggle that began as a civil war within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation before expanding into a broader clash involving the United States, Great Britain, and Spain. Influenced by the nativist teachings of Tecumseh, a militant faction known as the Red Sticks fought to resist American expansion and cultural assimilation, sparking devastating battles across the Southeast. The conflict drew in U.S. forces and Native allies, including the Cherokee and Choctaw, and ultimately culminated in a decisive American victory under Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. The war concluded with the Treaty of Fort Jackson, which forced the Creek confederacy to cede more than 21 million acres of ancestral land, reshaping the political landscape of the region. We examine how this conflict not only opened vast territories to American settlement but also laid critical groundwork for future Indian Removal policies and propelled Jackson onto the national stage.
