Although Porfiry doesn't believe the man, he takes the confession seriously. He shows Raskolnikov out. As Raskolnikov is on the stairs, Porfiry stops him again and says that he will see his soon for more questions. Raskolnikov goes home, where he realises that if Nikolai hadn't rushed into the room, he probably would have confessed to the crime. He decides that he will go to the memorial dinner for Marmeladov, but as he leaves the door, the stranger who called him a "murderer" the previous day enters his apartment. The man says that he lives in the pawnbroker's building, and says that he head he question the decorators about the blood.
