With media rights deals valued in the billions, Big Ten and SEC programs are operating on a different plane than the rest of college sports. Many administrators within these leagues argue that the NCAA’s centralized model—where a small school in a mid-major conference has the same voting power as a behemoth like Ohio State or Alabama—is no longer sustainable. By leaving, these conferences could keep 100% of their postseason revenue, specifically from the College Football Playoff and potentially a revamped basketball tournament. The Governance Crisis A breakaway would likely center on football-first governance. The Big Ten and SEC have already formed a joint advisory group to address issues like athlete compensation, the transfer portal, and "House vs. NCAA" settlement implications. If the NCAA cannot provide a stable legal "safe harbor" against ongoing antitrust lawsuits, the two power conferences may decide that self-governance is the only way to establish clear rules for professionalized college athletics.
