Cronus and the Titans: The Complete Story of the Gods Who Ruled Before Olympus | Greek Mythology for Sleep

from Mythology And Folklore For Sleep · host The Sleepy Mythkeeper

Cronus and the Titans: The Complete Story of the Gods Who Ruled Before Olympus | Greek Mythology for SleepA slow, quiet retelling of the age before Olympus, told from the beginning and made for falling asleep to.The whole story of the gods who came first, at a pace that's deliberately too slow to follow properly. That's the point. You're not meant to reach the end.Everyone knows the twelve on the mountain. This is about the generation they replaced, and the one before that. It starts with almost nothing — a gap, and then a sky and an earth that came out of it and had children together, twelve of them, and a father who was so appalled by some of what he'd made that he pushed it back down inside the earth and left it there. Which is where the first son with a sickle comes in, at his mother's suggestion. What follows is the long stretch that came after: an age people later called golden, ruled by a king who had taken his father's place by force and spent every year of it waiting for it to happen to him. So he swallowed his children as they arrived, one after another, until his wife had had enough and handed him a stone instead. The rest is a ten-year war, and the older powers who came up out of the ground to help, and a new order that put the losers somewhere very far down. It's the oldest layer of the whole thing, and by far the strangest. But the point of this recording isn't really the story. It's the hour or two spent drifting through it. The voice stays low and even the whole way through. No music, no sound effects, nothing that rises or drops or suddenly arrives. Every sentence sits at roughly the same level as the one before it, so nothing ever pulls your attention back up to the surface. That's what makes it work on the nights when your head won't switch off. It's just interesting enough to give your thoughts something to hold, and slow enough that they let go of it on their own. You don't have to follow along. You don't have to remember any of it in the morning. If you drift off somewhere near the very beginning and wake up much later, in the middle of a war between generations, you've used this exactly the way it's meant to be used. Most people don't make it past the first half hour, and the rest will still be here tomorrow night.Put it on, turn the volume down, and let it go on without you.Mythology & Folklore for Sleep — long, calm retellings of Greek myths, Norse legends, Egyptian tales, Hindu epics, Chinese classics and old folklore from around the world, made for insomnia and the hours when you can't sleep.
