Crossing The Threshold
from Healthy Rhythms Podcast · host Mark Dunwoody
Crossing the Threshold: When Staying the Same Costs Too Much Every meaningful change begins with a moment of hesitation. We find ourselves standing between the life we know and the life that is calling us. The familiar may no longer fit, but stepping into something new still feels uncertain. In this episode, based on Chapter One of The Imaginal Coach, I explore what it means to cross a threshold of change. I reflect on Joseph Campbell’s idea of “the refusal of the call,” the quiet ache of untapped potential and the point at which staying the same begins to cost more than changing. I also share something of my own experience of living and working across five countries. Looking back, those moves can sound adventurous and inevitable. At the time, they involved difficult goodbyes, practical questions and plenty of second thoughts. Perhaps clarity does not always come before we move. Sometimes it meets us after we take the first honest step. In this episode, we explore: Why hesitation is a natural part of meaningful change How to recognise the quiet ache of an unanswered call The difference between changing our circumstances and changing within What we may need to release as we enter a new season Why we rarely feel completely ready How imagination helps us see what might flourish Three questions to carry with you: Where am I standing at a threshold? What is the cost of staying exactly where I am? What is one honest step I can take towards what is calling me? This episode draws from Chapter One of The Imaginal Coach: How Leaders Unlock Human Potential One Conversation at a Time by Mark Dunwoody. Discover more at healthyrhythms.org. Buy the book here.
