Crossroads: Living Out “The Way” - Week 9
from Eastview Baptist Church Teaching Podcast · host Eastview Baptist Church
Crossroads: Living Out “The Way” Mark 10:13-22 "The Freedom of Childlike Faith: Trusting God with Everything"Point 1: A Childlike Heart is the Key to the Kingdom (verses 14-15) In a society where children were seen as 'lesser' or insignificant, Jesus elevates them, saying the Kingdom belongs to such as these. Childlike faith is the opposite of self-sufficiency. It’s a posture of openness, humility, and trust. Children depend entirely on others, and Jesus says this is the heart of Kingdom life. Application: What does it look like to have a childlike heart before God? It’s about letting go of pride, self-reliance, and the constant drive to prove ourselves. How can you practice childlike dependence this week in your relationship with God? Point 2: The Call to Radical Surrender (verse 21) The rich young ruler wanted eternal life, but he wanted it on his terms. Jesus’ response points out that true discipleship isn’t just about adding Jesus to an already full life. It’s about surrendering what holds you back from God. For this man, it was wealth; for us, it could be comfort, control, or reputation. Application: What are you holding onto that hinders full devotion to Jesus? Jesus’ call to the rich young ruler is a call to us all—to let go of whatever keeps us from fully surrendering to Him. Point 3: True Wealth is Found in God Alone (verse 22) The man’s wealth gave him security and status, but it ultimately couldn’t bring him life.Jesus’ call to 'sell everything and give to the poor' isn’t just about finances; it’s about where we place our trust and sense of worth. Jesus wants us to find our identity and security in God alone, not in what we possess. Application: What are you tempted to rely on besides God for security? Maybe it’s career success, relationships, or even religious performance. Jesus calls us to surrender these things and find our true security in Him alone. Call to Action (Invitation to Practice) Practical Steps: 1. Practice Childlike Faith: This week, try letting go of the need to control everything. Spend a few minutes each day in prayer, simply expressing your dependence on God without asking for anything. Trust Him like a child trusts a loving parent. 2. Identify and Release Your Attachments: Reflect on areas where you feel most attached—whether it’s possessions, achievements, or security. Commit to releasing your hold on these things, asking God to help you place your trust in Him instead. 3. Serve with Radical Generosity: Jesus called the rich young ruler to give to the poor. Find a tangible way this week to practice generosity, whether through giving, serving, or encouraging someone who can’t repay you. Radical generosity breaks our attachment to earthly treasures and helps us invest in the Kingdom. Invitation to Reflection: "What would it look like if we all followed Jesus with the openness of a child and the surrender of the rich young ruler? Jesus invites us to trust Him fully and to see Him as the greatest treasure we could ever possess."
