Crucified with Christ: The Heart of the Christian Life (Galatians 2) | F. F. Bruce

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Deep Dive into The Epistle to the Galatians by F. F. Bruce - Galatians 2 In Galatians 2, Paul defends the independent, law-free gospel he preaches to the Gentiles by recounting a pivotal conference in Jerusalem and a subsequent conflict in Antioch. Fourteen years after his conversion, Paul travelled to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus to present his gospel privately to church leaders, including James, Cephas, and John. He did this to ensure his ministry was effective and not running in vain. Despite pressure from false brethren who sought to enslave believers to the law, Paul's companion Titus, a Gentile, was not compelled to be circumcised. The Jerusalem leaders contributed nothing new to Paul's message; instead, they recognized that God had entrusted Paul with the mission to the Gentiles, just as Peter was entrusted with the mission to the Jews. They offered the right hand of fellowship, agreeing on their respective mission fields and simply requesting that Paul continue to remember the poor. Later, a major confrontation occurred in Antioch. Initially, Peter freely ate with Gentile Christians. However, when messengers arrived from James, Peter withdrew from table-fellowship out of fear of the circumcision party. This hypocrisy led other Jewish believers, and even Barnabas, to follow suit. Recognizing this behavior as a departure from gospel truth, Paul publicly rebuked Peter, challenging his inconsistency in living like a Gentile but implicitly forcing Gentiles to adopt Jewish customs. This incident highlights Paul's core theological argument: human beings, whether Jewish or Gentile, are justified solely by faith in Jesus Christ and not by works of the law. Believers are crucified with Christ; they die to the law so that Christ may live within them. If righteousness could be achieved through the law, Paul concludes, then Christ died for no reason.
