Cultivating a Relationship with Nature through Poetry - Stephen Wing Ep 348

Stephen Wing was a missionary kid, and who grew up overseas. Re-entry to the States as an adolescent was rough, but a summer camp experience canoeing in the Canadian wilderness got him through it. Those trips every summer became his sanctuary, and the wilderness is still his spiritual center wherever he is. In college Stephen discovered hitchhiking and graduated without a plan in his head except to travel the country. He majored in writing but became a poet when he realized he could write about things that actually meant something to him -- which at that point was hitchhiking -- rather than as a kind of intellectual game. Letting go of destinations and deadlines, Stephen found that life has its own innate intelligence and would teach him what he needed to know if he released the need for control. After 12 years on the road, Stephen met his wife, Dawn, and settled in Atlanta. He worked as an editor and recycler, got involved in political activism, organized interfaith gatherings to celebrate the equinoxes and solstices, and eventually started leading seasonal workshops for poets, each time in a different nature preserve or greenspace around the city.
