Cultivating Thanks
from Island Community Church (Memphis) · host Barrett Bowden
William Wordsworth once said: "Rest and be thankful." How simple the instruction; how wonderful the invitation. Over the next few weeks, we are going to do just that. This time every year, we are presented with an opportunity to stop, count our blessings, and say thanks. In Scripture, we find that this a good and godly thing to do. We are encouraged (actually commanded) to live with hearts and lifestyles of gratitude toward God. God wants us to be full of thankfulness and praise. Our hearts were created for this. It's the right response to Him. It's the best thing for us. The question for us: How can we cultivate this heart of thankfulness? Is it practically possible to keep our hearts and lives spilling over with praise? Even in the middle of fluctuating circumstances, feelings, successes, statuses, and safeties? Actually, yes. In fact, as we will see today from Psalm 103, our gratitude need not depend on any of those things at all. Begin praying now that God would give you a new heart full of genuine, personal thankfulness. We're so glad you're here!
