Garantizar que se implemente en América Latina y el Caribe el acceso a la información ambiental, la participación pública en los procesos de toma de decisiones ambientales, el acceso a la justicia en asuntos ambientales, así como la creación y fortalecer las capacidades y la cooperación para vivir en un medio ambiente sano y un desarrollo sostenible, son parte de los objetivos de los acuerdos de Escazú que adoptaron los Estados partes. Todas las disposiciones del acuerdo de Escazú, entraron en vigore el Día Internacional de la Tierra, el 22 de abril. Esta normativa es el único acuerdo vinculante emanado de la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre Desarrollo Sostenible (Río+20), el primer decreto regional ambiental de América Latina y el Caribe y el primero en el mundo en contener disposiciones específicas sobre defensores de derechos humanos en asuntos ambientales.
