Nehemiah served as cupbearer to the king Artaxerxes in 446 BC. The responsibility of a cupbearer was to protect and to thwart off any internal or external attack on the king. The king concerned himself with the health and well-being of his personal cupbearer. He had to look out for any attempts of assassination's or usurpations- for this any vulnerability or personal health or compromises could affect the throne and the kingdom. Any sign of fear or insecurity could result in executions for those who were at his service.
