Custodian Detained After ICE Raid | Jacksonville News

A St. Johns County Schools custodian, Leonel Bolivar, was detained by ICE while heading to work — shocking the district who had no prior notice and believed his temporary status was still valid. Though he’s still officially employed and on leave, ICE claims his authorization expired after Venezuela’s special immigration status ended, despite a pending asylum application. An immigration lawyer explains that pending asylum doesn’t protect against detention due to overwhelming backlogs — cases can take 6-10 years. Bolivar, fleeing Venezuela for safety, was en route to open a school when arrested; his family urgently hopes his August 26th hearing brings clarity and justice.
