Cutting Deep Into Horror | The Host (2006): Bong Joon-ho’s River Monster and Family Horror

Bong Joon-ho’s “The Host” (2006) brings a river monster into the heart of Seoul—and tears a family apart when it takes a young girl. Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi explore the Park family’s desperate rescue effort, the creature’s design, and the film’s sudden shifts between horror, grief, and dark comedy. Their discussion connects environmental contamination and failed authorities with the personal stakes that make this Korean monster movie hurt. Cutting Deep Into Horror includes full-film spoilers as the hosts examine why the family matters as much as the beast.
