When I say "I stand with those who favor equality," I am referring to people who want practically full equality for themselves and their fellow citizens (and not merely that they equalize opportunity, but whatever maximizes equality of outcome and simply improves life for people overall). It's a tough concept for some to grasp, to the point where people fear it, condemn it, think it's hopelessly naive, inherently irrational, etc...
