Daily Devotion 52: The Heart of the Law vs. the Monster of Legalism
from Berean Devotion · host Berean Baptist Church
In today’s reading, we see a powerful contrast between empty religion and the true heart of God’s law.In Luke 6, Jesus is repeatedly confronted by the Pharisees, who weaponize the Sabbath rules to accuse Him and His disciples. Instead of submitting to their rigid external demands, Jesus declares Himself “Lord of the Sabbath” and shows that the law was never meant to prevent acts of mercy or compassion. He then delivers His famous Sermon on the Plain, beginning with the Beatitudes, and lays out the radical, heart-level commands of the Kingdom: love your enemies, do not judge hypocritically, examine your own fruit, and build your life on the solid rock of obedience to His words. This teaching reveals that the Pharisees had completely missed the point. They had stripped the law of its soul—God’s character of mercy, justice, and love—and turned it into a burdensome monster of legalism and control. The Old Testament reading in Deuteronomy 4–5 provides the perfect backdrop. Moses rehearses God’s law for the new generation about to enter the Promised Land. The people respond with holy fear and reverence as they hear the Ten Commandments and witness the fire and voice of God at Sinai. Their humility and awe show the kind of heart posture that prepares someone to truly follow God.
