He does not merely point sheep toward safety from a distance. He walks ahead of them and lays down His own life for them. Every wilderness crossing in this psalm points toward the greater rescue Jesus accomplished, leading sinners out of bondage to sin and death toward an inheritance no sheep could ever win for itself. There we find true grace, forgiveness, and salvation, secured completely through His finished work. Through His redemption we are welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven, and in the Lord's Supper the Good Shepherd feeds His flock still, giving His true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins.Whatever wilderness you are walking through, remember whose flock you belong to.
