Daily Devotional - Nehemiah 5:1-19 - Dealing with Oppression

from Sharise Johnson-Moore's Podcast · host Sharise Johnson-Moore

Daily Devotional: Dealing with OppressionNehemiah 5:1-19 In Nehemiah 5, we see that opposition doesn’t always come from the outside—sometimes, it arises from within. As the people of Jerusalem worked hard to rebuild the wall, a crisis emerged: the wealthy were exploiting the poor, charging excessive interest, and taking their land, homes, and even children as payment for debts. This injustice threatened not only the unity of the people but also their ability to complete God’s work. Nehemiah, moved by righteous anger, confronted the leaders and called them to repentance. He reminded them that they were to serve God, not oppress their fellow Israelites. His leadership demonstrated that true restoration isn’t just about rebuilding walls—it’s about restoring justice, integrity, and compassion within the community. This passage challenges us to examine our own actions. Are we uplifting others or contributing to their burdens? God calls us to be people of justice, mercy, and love. When we stand against oppression and choose righteousness, we reflect His heart and create an environment where His blessings can flow.
