Judges 11:1–2 (ESV) - “Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead was the father of Jephthah. And Gilead’s wife also bore him sons. And when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, ‘You shall not have an inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.’” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall reminds us that the circumstances of our birth do not determine our destiny. Though Jephthah was rejected and driven away by his own family, God still had a plan for his life and raised him up to become a great leader in Israel. Pastor Sumrall explains that while rejection and injustice can lead to bitterness and wrong choices, they do not have to define who we become. Jephthah’s life shows that even after painful beginnings, God can restore purpose and use a person greatly when they choose forgiveness over anger.
