Luke 21:34–36 (ESV) - “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” In this episode of Daily Devotions, Pastor David Sumrall addresses the reality of heaviness and depression, teaching that some burdens come from the choices we make. Jesus warns that hearts can become weighed down by carousing, drunkenness, and the anxieties of daily life; things that slowly dull the heart and drain spiritual strength. Pastor Sumrall explains that while life brings real pressures, believers must guard their hearts and make intentional decisions about what they allow to influence their emotions and outlook. Instead of being consumed by negativity, distractions, or unhealthy habits, Christians are called to stay alert, pray, and choose a life of joy and focus on God.
