played Folsom (hotel) last night, calling in from Willits; they played a Johnny Cash song last night; the 1st time they played Folsom Dallas' guitar player went to the prison to take a photo, only to learn that it's still a working prison & photos aren't allowed; touring as a 4-piece band, with a driver who sometime sits in; learned music as a kid from his grandmother, then his dad taught him "House of the Rising Son" on guitar...Dallas started writing songs when he was 12...he won his Junior High School talent show with "Sweet Home Alabama"; he grew up in New Braunfels, Texas, where Brian Duckworth (Robert Earl Keen's fiddle player) had a fiddle shop, & Brian encouraged Dallas to play music; Dallas landed his 1st record deal when he was 17, with his 20s pretty wild, until he started following a Shaman, & played with Dr. John in New Orleans; in his 20s he met Bob Dylan in L.A., who gave him some tips about the music business; Dallas started writing in earnest after that, had a son, & moved to Nashville where Sierra Ferrell sang on his album "Southern Wind"; Dallas wrote a song that Charlie Crockett covered about gambling, "The Only Game in Town", & recently Dallas wrote a follow-up song that he performs with Ray Wylie Hubbard, "Read 'Em & Weep"; how does a tour come together? "It comes down to festival anchor dates, & you fill in around that, playing where you know you have a following, or want to build a following." Dallas got to Santa Cruz the "old school" way, a legendary musician, Robert Earl Keen (or Brian Duckworth) got him in touch with a "legendary promoter", Sleepy John Sandidge & Snazzy Productions, & he sold out the Ugly Mug last year; "Music is a lot of odd jobs." The Money Question? (Are you able to make money with your music, & if so, how?): A: Yes! "Very, very carefully...working very hard...but save some time & energy for your own family." Advice for the younger folks? "If you get into music, do it because you love it. Avoid being corrupted."
