Dalmatian Dawn: Bonito, Bass, and Perfect Light on the Adriatic Tonight

Along the Dalmatian coast tonight we’ve got light northerlies easing off, seas staying fairly calm with a gentle chop, and stable high pressure keeping skies mostly clear. Air temps are sitting in the low 20s Celsius, dropping a bit before dawn, with sea temps around 22–24°C along the central coast and a touch cooler up toward Istria. Sunrise comes just after 5 a.m., sunset a bit after 8:45 p.m., giving a long, bright window but the real action is in the low light. Tides here are modest, but we still get that little push: the pre‑dawn flood and the evening ebb are when the bait stacks on edges, so plan around first light and last light. Those two windows have been the difference between a slow night and a full cooler. Fish activity has been solid the last few days. Nearshore, anglers working the stone piers and rocky points around Zadar, Šibenik, and the islands are finding schools of small to medium sea bass and bluefish pushing bait right against the rocks. Mixed in are picarel, saddled bream, and the usual reef pickers. A few better dentex and snapper have come from deeper ledges in 30–50 meters. The stars of the show right now are the pelagics. Off Split and out around Brač and Hvar, boats trolling early and late are picking up bonito and smaller tuna along current lines and color changes, especially where birds are dipping. There have also been scattered reports of larger amberjack hitting live bait over wrecks and pinnacles. Best lures: For the rocks and harbor mouths, small metal jigs in the 15–30 g range in natural sardine, anchovy, or mackerel patterns are producing well. Slim minnow plugs and small topwaters at dawn are deadly on sea bass and bluefish. Offshore, deep‑diving hardbaits in blue‑silver and UV patterns, plus resin trolling feathers and small skirted lures, have been taking bonito and tuna. Best bait: You can’t beat fresh sardine or anchovy, either fished live on a light fluorocarbon leader or as small strip baits on a paternoster over rough ground. For bottom species, strips of squid, cut shrimp, and bits of mussel are doing work. At night, a simple bread‑and‑cheese mix still brings in bream around the harbors if you just want a bend in the rod. A couple of hot spots to put on your list: – The rocky points and outer breakwaters around Zadar’s channel mouths and nearby islands. Work the up‑current sides at first light with small jigs and plugs for bass, bluefish, and the odd bonito pushing in tight. – The deeper drop‑offs and reef edges off Brač and Hvar. Drift or slow‑troll around 30–60 meters for dentex, snapper, and amberjack, and keep a trolling rod ready along the surface lines for passing bonito and tuna.
