Dan Granger is the CEO and founder of Oxford Road, the leading independently owned ad agency specializing in audio channels such as podcasts, radio, streaming and more. They have helped countless DTC brands scale their customer acquisition efforts and grow from startup to $1B+ valuations. Dan started his work in radio programming back at Clear Channel Radio back in 2003, which would eventually become IHeartRadio. He saw the internet and podcast wave coming as early as 2006, and started forming relationships within Silicon Valley at that time. In 2013, he launched Oxford Road to great success and continues to shape the massive emerging podcasting ecosystem. This Episode’s Heavy-hitter’s: Dan’s interest in media started with writing controversial editorials when he was young in school. Later, while working a job that required him to drive tapes around town, Dan fell in love with the format of talk radio. One of the first clients Dan had was LegalZoom. He convinced them to advertise on a legal advice podcast, where the idea was to pair the product they offered with an audience that already had a presumable need and interest in that very niche setting. While working at IHeartRadio, Dan gave a “Talk Radio 2.0” presentation where he forecasted a lot of what ended up happening in the podcasting ad industry. Unfortunately, the timing was early and the radio companies he worked for weren’t ready to follow the trend. A major break for Dan was placing radio advertisers on Adam Carolla’s podcast, who was an early innovator in the space. The ad performance was really incomparable, and performed incredibly well. Dan believes that the future of fixing political and other biases found in content is through assigning a version of “nutrition labels.” These labels would help people track political leanings that might affect the accuracy or narrative behind the content people consume.
