Dan Hughes - 2x WNBA Champion and 2020 United States Olympic Gold Medalist - S3:E3

from The Sports Deli · host Hoot

Let me first say that Coach Dan Hughes is one of the most kind, humble, giving, and thoughtful leaders I've ever encountered. He's a true ally. And an incredible coach, mentor, friend, father, husband, and grandfather. And he's had a lot of coaching jobs over the years. He's been a high school coach, college coach, WNBA coach (and Champion twice in 2018 and 2020), and Olympic Coach (and Golf Medalist in 2020). He's coached both men and women. And it all started where he grew up. In the 45744. Better known as Lowell, Ohio. He credits his amazing parents for not squelching his dream of being a coach which he knew he wanted to be when he was just 7 years old. He was also inspired by the legendary Jerry West growing up. You don't want to miss the rest of this incredible story during this profoundly powerful interview hosted by Val Whiting, former 2x All-American and 2x National Champion at Stanford under Hall-of-Fame coach, Tara VanDerveer and ABL and WNBA star (and Tik Tok sensation @IAMCOACHVAL) and Hoot. Coach Hughes walks us down memory lane and why he finally started getting on social media in 2021 (HINT: It was because of his daughter). Speaking of his daughter, Coach Hughes is now an Assistant Coach (for his daughter's team) for which his granddaughter plays for and he couldn't stop raving about how excited he was about this opportunity to be a part of 3 generations of Hughes', for picture day, and for the teams' first game. Coach Hughes is truly a phenomenal coach. Not because he's coached for over 40 years. Or because he won two WNBA Championships. Or a Gold Medal. He is a phenomenal coach because he cares. And he cares about helping anyone he crosses paths to be the best versions of themselves. He is truly selfless and has a unique understanding of the greater good. He isn't afraid to get out of his own way and he cares more about developing leaders than anything. Coach Hughes talks about the tumultuous 1960's, his love of music, and who he would love to have at his dinner table if he could choose any 5 people, past or present...dead or alive. Thank you again for the continued support and it was truly an honor and a privilege to share space with Val and Coach Hughes.
