In this episode of The Successful Side Gig with Adam Hymans you will hear an interview with Dana Royal with Indie Hatch an amazing Stationary and Wedding Invitation company in Colorado. Dana shares her amazing story from her gap year, to Art School, working doing video editing at a larger company, all while trying to be a rock star mom! She shares her struggles with office politics and the difficulties of being limited in your creativity. Ultimately being let go from her video production job and having support from them while she was able to look for other positions at a start up company with crazy work hours! Having a child and realizing after maternity leave that working at this job was not for her. Pursuing her passion and having a creative outlet was what she needed from a side gig and Indie Hatch was born.
Key Lessons and take aways from this weeks episode:
- Sometimes it takes time and experience to find what you really want
- Having a child is monumental event and often changes your career mindset
- Etsy was way harder that it seemed at first!
- Continuously having low page views inspired her to look further into Etsy Forums and get down to the nitty gritty.
- Make sure you have beautiful imagery of your products
- You have to sell a lot of items in order to make it on Etsy.
- You will have hard work that takes you no where but you have to persist!
- Occasionally one thing can easily lead to another either idea or career path
- Seeking feedback in forums or Instagram was huge.
- If you have a family: Get your kids on an early sleep schedule that has been huge
- Art school got me used to critique and it is important to seek it out and
