Yeah, this is a surprise. Keep it on the level with you guys. Lisa just did this today and she's like chocolateing herself already at my unbridled reaction to it. So I'm just gonna kick it right out.
These are always the best when Matt doesn't know what's gonna happen before I get started. It's not that often that happens, but it happens. Yeah, for the WTH-3 that try to keep them kind of on his toes because I want his legit reaction. It happens.
So let's just start here. The day was like any other. Everyone was going about their business getting ready for the festival of Mary Magdalene. The time was July 15-18 and sometimes people noticed something strange.
This is why I shout out the 16th century folks. Mrs. Frau Trofe was in the middle of the street dancing. Tells people thought Mrs.
Trofe's moves were fantastic and began to laugh and clap at her jovial jig. Things took a turn however for the bazaar when Frau did not stop dancing until she collapsed. I relate to Frau on a personal level. Anybody who's ever been with me in wedding or a club or a bar or a family get together, my family are yours.
I'm sure I have somewhere. If not, I can certainly find somewhere. So Frau, good for you. Shout out.
Only having slept for a few hours then after that, Frau popped up once again and began dancing through the night and into the next morning and through the next night and the next night and for six solid days without resting. She was dancing. I'm like, this is Matt. This is awesome.
The next part of this is just even more tragic, but also kind of like just just your devotion. By day three midway through her adventure, her shoes were soaked with blood. Day three of six, she was bleeding on her feet and dancing despite that, having, oh my god, within a week, this is the best part. This is where the Forrest Gumpark did this come down and I love it even more.
34 people joined her. By the end of the month, there were nearly 400, most of them female. I mean, this is like Forrest Gump and me and like, you know, and like Michael Jackson also donated some semen or something like because she was just killing it. So this was actually not, I mean, a planned thing.
Like nobody was like, okay, like yeah, we're gonna do this and like it's the protestor. This is a show of love or like anything. This is just like, why is that bitch still dancing? Here's my question.
Here's my question. Wait, ready? I'm dead serious now. I'm dead serious right now.
What kind of music was playing? Right? Was any music playing? Was more of that?
Who was this DJ or this band? The Admiral is dancing for six days straight. Get them signed to someone in 1518. I mean, damn, what a show of love.
She was asking for encores for damn near 140 hours. You know what she would have been good at? Yeah, she would have been great at the Penn State. Yeah, shout out to Penn State and fun.
And honestly, you know what else she would have been good at? Like, anything that involved movement? I'm thinking of all the different things that she could do. She could be a floor manager.
She could be the best waitress of all fucking time working for 130 some hours. So obviously, this was not your average flash mob here. You know, they didn't plan all this. There was no designation.
I'm like, what's where? What music? So eventually, they had to drag Frau Trafie off to shrine some religious shrine to try and heal her of her at that point. They caught her too late.
I mean, six days. They literally were probably about five and a half days too late dancing nonstop like this. This woman did not sleep beside the time she passed out. And then she got right back up and started dancing.
Anybody that's been doing music festival right now is like a little shit. You motherfucker slept at some point. And if you didn't, then you and Frau are homies too. Right.
But I'm just saying. Wow. So the dancing plague, I guess they called this it actually became a thing it didn't even just get Frau. More people ended up dying because of strokes, heart attacks, exhaustion.
So like a lot of people that are not funny. Like, they were saying 15 residents a day in this town were dying just from dancing in this like dance mob that Frau started. What the fuck, man? At what point?
Why would you just go? Hey, what's Frau? Yeah. After she left one, everybody like, I was wrapping up the bed.
We're good, man. Right. Who was booking these acts? This was like Woodstock on fucking dope.
And right. So the city officials actually tried to fight fire with fire on this one, which you got to love their actual efforts to make this work. But they tried to hire people, musicians, and built a stage. Where did this take place?
It's in Germany. Frau. Is Frau Germany? No, Frau is what you call like an older respected German woman.
Really? Frau line is what you call a younger German woman. Frau is what you call like a married woman. I did not know that.
That was in Strasburg, Alice in the Holy Roman Empire. What the hell is Strasburg? Alice? Hey, Al, S.A.C.
What the hell is that? It's in the Roman Empire. So I guess I don't think there were places back then. Well, I mean, yeah, no, I definitely don't think that we had like Germany and Austria and France and like that.
But I'm sure it'd be like in the Germany era. Like the adult states, we'll call that. People were dancing. People were having a little time.
Getting lit, man. Dying, people dying. I mean, what? If I'm dancing too much.
Yeah. So they hoped that this building the stage and getting a band to come, they would help earn it out. But obviously that didn't work. You know, you two and Dave Matthews actually played this shot.
They've been touring ever since. The sounds were there, but they didn't play. Keith was fucked up. So unfortunately that effort did not do anything.
More people joined in and more and more people were in the streets just dancing going crazy. And honestly, they scared the shit out of a lot of people that weren't expecting this to be going on. And they're sitting there like for such a long time. I was like, I think of your college cadence.
Like, oh, this would be fun. Let's go down and join this. And then you're there for like a day or two. You're like, ladies, we want to stop.
These motherfuckers are still dancing. What are they doing? And the dance ones, I thought they were like EDM or like even like good hip hop. Like nobody was getting anything done.
The word that they used to describe this is macabre, which for those of you who don't know what macabre means, it's like kind of like somber and sad and slow and like, so they were just kind of shuffling back and forth. Weirdly moving themselves the entire time. And then like, it didn't get the point where somebody was like, Hey, let me get a water and sit this song out. Let me get a water and sit this song out.
No, they dance until our feet were bleeding. Like nubs to a football. Wait, literally, like they were actually dancing like, they said that the blood was like covering the streets because they get so hard. I mean, for anyone now who's been to a music festival, I'm just going to say the tone is set.
It's been set. I don't want to hear how lit Coachella was. I want to hear how lit Beyonce set was. She didn't have people dancing all month.
He bleeding, nubs, carrying people off the street. We got a piece of full like that. I love to continue talking about this. This is amazing.
Right? Like I knew you would enjoy this one. I can't even fathom. I'm like, I've been to some real fun parties.
Nothing. Nothing. I mean, I've been out all night. I've been out for, you know, a long time.
And I've done some I'm not a cocaine or anything like that. I'm into that stuff. Don't do drugs. Give hugs.
I'm not into that shit. But I'm just saying like this was before all that. This is before Molly before X before fucking anything like Addie my ass. Whoever had some pot back in the day at this fucking thing was killing it.
That dude's family is now the Rothschilds. All right. This is amazing. Like this is an incredible story.
I don't know why this isn't like a celebrated event every year. Is this what tomorrow well is now? Should we go tomorrow? And like give this thing a tribute like 2018 1518.
Wait a fucking second. This happened exactly 500 years ago in July of 1518. We're gonna throw a party in and commemorate this time. We're gonna throw a party for this.
End of this month. I'm doing it. I'm gonna make this a very public announcement. We need to find out what this event was called.
Right? This is an amazing moment in history. It's not talked about enough. People died from dancing.
People died from dancing too much. I mean, if you're gonna go any way, I think that would be pretty like fun way. At least you're having fun. This was Woodstock like 450 years before Woodstock.
No bands. No good music. Yeah. Like that was one dude who was playing like whatever in a court or something harmonica.
Like what did they play back then? Like think of the one dude who was playing the drums. They probably made bank. We probably would have died in this.
Like we would have seen that one on you. I would have been the first two to I would have definitely been in that. I'm not like the mentality type. I think at some point out it's been like, yeah, yeah, this is my song.
I'm not into this. I'm cool, bro. Like who's that food truck at? I think that I had food trucks back then at this event.
Oh my God. They never closed. We'd still be at this. It would be down to nothing now.
Wow. I can't believe it. All right. So I mean, we got to just honestly.
So now like we love this. You know, I'm so into this. Right back then, people were freaked the fuck out. They thought they thought some seriously weird shit was going on around that.
Like the dancers appeared to be totally insane because they're just still dancing. Like you wake up the next day. Look out your window. I think somebody who lived right by this, but like just wasn't feeling it.
Matt, I'd be like, I'd be afraid of this. If you were outside dancing here, I'm not going to be like Matt without stopping. You're like, I'm still going like, wow, I need whatever they were smoking. Right.
So they, I mean, you know, back then obviously religion was the predominant thing of the day. So who was to blame God or the devil for this? That's a big question. And at this point, I'm still wondering that, you know, I think that all the time.
We were dancing shoes and all the other shit. So as this play continued to progress and get worse, nobles who were concerned, so this had to have been like an established state like France or somewhere. Nobles who were concerned, sought the advice of local physicians who reportedly and also still to the state don't have a fucking clue what was going on. They rolled out astrological and supernatural causes.
It wasn't the Taurus. It wasn't the Pisces either. All right, I'm a very good. I just want to say it wasn't me.
Instead, they just renounced the plague as a natural disease caused by hot blood. There he goes. Oh, no. That was the founder of this.
That's the reincarnated brow. Yeah, me and for all, I guess are related somehow. We were telling it at the wedding last night, I'll be honest. Right.
You can ask the earth, shut out the earth and shut out Caitlin and Nathan. You guys have a great wedding. Para Selsis, who if you don't know, that is what you've been. He was a physician and an alchemist who visited Strasburg in 1526 just a few years after the dancing plague occurred.
He actually is the first one to commemorate and write about for outrofe and he was the first to use the term choreomania to describe the dancing sickness. I want to give a shout out to him as well. Because that's awesome. Choreomania.
Imagine going to the doctor's and say, yeah, I think you have a case of choreomania. You should probably sit still for a few minutes. What do you think? No.
Well, good. You don't hear the music. Start moving, walking out the door like a dog. Thanks for your heads up.
See you later. Oh, God. Get a kick spin and walk out the damn hallway. Get your tickets now for the dog stars.
Oh, no. So surprise how fast civilization can disappear. No! No, there is Keller B kel, Jacob Eloudi.
They're people out there. They need our help. Josh Boulan. Shoot first.
And he choir afterwards. Mark your quality. Oh, okay, just like. And guy peers.
Arm up. The dog stars, he's right above the sky. The theater is August 28th. Get tickets now.
Wow. So he has no opinion on what caused the dancing plague. And most of us would probably agree that this was most likely the cause. If you actually boil it down to what they're getting out here.
Turned out the Frau Trau Fei's husband absolutely hated when she was dancing. Anytime. So my first thought of that is, and Para Celsis agrees that some of the people of Strasburg believe that she would just start dancing to annoy the motherfucker she was living with. To bug her husband.
She has to really hate it. And she danced herself to death. She must have hated him. I full on believe.
You imagine that thought. That in 500 years, there's no women that would do this. Right? Yeah, right.
And I full on believe. But it's really funny. Like he hated dancing. He hated when she would dance.
She got 400 motherfucking people to dance. You have imagined that. I would ride outside his house. I hope.
I think that's awesome. Can you imagine your biggest puppies leave me? I hate just outside your window and drones. No, I'm just like blown away.
I mean, the dedication. He probably got home from work that day as a blacksmith or a horse farmer or whatever they did primarily back then. Yeah. And he certainly wasn't an Uber driver.
And he was like, where's Frau? And then every day for a week, that's the same question. Where did Frau go? Where did Frau go?
And if anybody was there to answer the question, they probably would have the same pretty good answer. And it was, she is still fucking dancing. She's out there killing you. Feed bleeding.
Feed giving him updates. Like this was way before Instagram stories. Snap didn't happen. So somebody was trying to back down and I'm like, you are not going to believe it.
Day four. There's no music at this point. It's 3 a.m. And at this point, her husband was probably drunk as a guy.
Just dealing with it, trying to figure out what the fuck he's going on. And then I'm just telling her like, now there's like 50 people there. They're like dancing. And he's like, what do they do?
And they're like, they're still dancing. That's so bad, Jim. I think it's so cool. I love it.
I do. I really think it's awesome. I mean, I really hate it. I can't commit to something like that.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not that anything. I'm not that dedicated to anything, really. But I'm damn impressed by these guys. Yeah, the commitment.
And their commitment. And this was 500 years ago. That dedication does not exist anymore. No, they really put their own, literally, their whole lives into this.
And then ended them. But it was interesting because Paris Celsius wasn't fucking me. Paris Celsius. Is that right?
Yeah, Paris Celsius. Paris Celsius. Paris Celsius. Paris Celsius.
He thought that this could be broken down into three main causes. And first he said it must have been born out of imagination. Like home girl was just imagining some crazy scenario. And I don't know how in the world he chalked that up to 500 other people joining her.
But first he thought it was born out of imagination then. I love that though. I mean, good for that. You know, good for that.
Imagine for six days. Oh, I guess you'd start to go a little cuckoo after delirium sets in. Oh yeah, I mean after being in Thorne a couple of times I know that it sets in after a short while. But at the same time, six days.
I want to know why nobody said that. I was like, what the fuck are you all doing? Can we make this into like a horror movie where you like one of those comedy movies? I would be so into it.
It's zombie ass people are dancing for hours. I want to make the movie where we get transported back to this time. But then we have like somebody with us. Like I want Kevin Hart to be in this movie with us.
They'd be like in the middle of all this movie. What the fuck is going on? Like flipping out. Like just losing a shit on these people.
Oh man. I'm having all sorts of thoughts now. This is so great. I remember I've never heard of this event in my life before this.
Right. So get the second part is even better. Tell them why. So.
Because I feel cute. The second reason that he thought this could have been happening was first imagination, second ly sexual frustration. So he thought they were dancing the sexual frustration out of their body. Why would that be what you would do when you just like go and go run and beat it off and just be done?
You see me in the clip. Oh my gosh. I wouldn't do what you said. But I also.
When dancing people actually you might. I'll say this. I'll say this. But I don't dance because of sexual frustration.
I dance so that I can find someone to vent my sexual frustration with. There he goes. So maybe that's a thing. Maybe this was like a mating call and come to ask uncontrollable.
What if it was? What if like that was the survive this world? It's like all right. What are we going to fuck?
Or do you like non-existent and down the bone? Everybody like dapping each other up. Like clapping asses. And like unbelievable.
I mean that's like the understandable extent for this really. What do you go from there after you've been dancing for fucking days? Can you imagine like after a month of this? Like just finally it's stopping.
Like you know like okay guys that was fun. Go back to your day jobs. Tending to your horses and milk. People will be talking about it for like months after like we do there.
Hell yeah. How long? Did you want to see dance until she cut her feet off? Goodness.
I think I would actually be scared after a good couple days. I'm probably freaking out after about a solid half hour here. Like what are you guys doing with them music? But all right.
So finally this is great. Go at least. Yeah he thought that the third reason could have been bodily causes for some of the people who exhibited uncontrolled dancing. So what was he saying?
Like he thought they were like seizing. Like they were just like uncontrollably like dancing. I'm really. Get out.
That's what I'm thinking. It is interesting that historian John Waller stated that a marathon runner could have not lasted the intense workout that these men and women did hundreds of years ago. So they must have been fit as motherfuckers. I thought in like the 1500s people were fat.
Like it wasn't that the thing like big marshmallow-y type people. Mine kind of people. Was that the decade that like that was the body type? Or was it skinny ass like Hercules people?
That was in the decade. What was the decade? What did these people look like? It was the century.
What was the ideal woman back in this time? I think most people were serfs. It's slender. Yeah.
Not eating very much. So these people must have died quickly because they weren't. Yeah. And another theory that was interesting was that food poisoning caused by toxic and psychoactive chemicals products of ear-gilt fungi.
So trims. Which grows commonly on grains in the wheat family such as rad. So some kind of fungus they thought could have maybe put these people into some sort of psychosis where they just fucking dancing couldn't stop. They were doing shrimp even back then.
Right. Wheat shrimp. You know, I want that kind of drug that keeps you dancing for decades. Right.
Sounds like a hell of a job. Well, ear-gilt to mean is the main psychoactive product of the ear-goth fungi. And it's structurally related to the drug lysergic acid diaphthalamide. Which is LSD-25.
And that's the substance from which LSD-25 was originally synthesized. So this is like LSD. Like they were on it. This was a thought.
It wasn't proven. Because I don't know how you approved something from 15-18. But it was a thought that they were on some sort of crazy psychedelic drug. accidentally, like they often see some gnarly fries.
Just on it. Brains are dibs and for days to other people. And some fungus also have been implicated in other major historical anomalies, including the Salem witch trials. So they believed the people that were accused of being witches, the women, were actually just checking out on LSD.
The same kind of shit that maybe people danced uncontrollably for a month. Well, I didn't know that. Yeah, it's not interesting. And while we're speculating that the dancing was, quote, stress-induced psychosis, unquote, on a mass level since the region where the people danced was riddled with starvation and disease and had to have an extended to be superstitious.
So you think, what does that mean though? Because isn't psychosis mean you're out of it? But if they were superstitious, wouldn't that be an active thought process? Like you're superstitious, so you do something to ward off the superstitions.
On those opposite of each other, psychosis and acting on a superstition. I guess that could be like- I think they're saying that the defense of those superstitions could drive you to psychosis. Oh, so you get like still obsessive with thinking that this will cure something? Exactly.
Honestly, dance until your people fall off. That would make sense in this era of time too, where people were just not sure what the hell was going on. And I'm still wondering what the hell was going on. Right?
I don't... Is it insane to think about? Anyone on for a month? And they were dancing like foam in the mouth dancing like Looney Dunes.
I'm gonna call them Looney Boons swear, they were like, they look probably like zombies, Matt. These people were just shaking in the street. But you know what the best part is? Like the Walking Dead auditions.
Right? Like what the best part is, is like the police reaction to this. To build a stage and have a band come out and play through it. I know, yeah, that was their idea.
I was like, well, let's get everyone out here. They turned it into a concert and it still didn't stop. I'm... Can you imagine what they were thinking when that drove 400 more people out to dance?
Yeah, now they were like, fuck. What do we do wrong? I told y'all not to get a fucking band. Like what were you guys thinking?
Well, it's even more about Madison and the cases of dancing plague were reported in the same region during the medieval era. What? Right? Records showed that in 1237 a large number of children were affected with the dancing plague in Erfurt.
Well, I mean, I guess whatever would be back then. Yeah, so you were right, it was around Germany. That's what it says. So about 100 children started to dance uncontrollably.
I would have been like, this but my child's plus us. Like this devil's work right there. Dancing uncontrollably, my child's going spastic. Especially back then, they're freaking out.
Right? Like you said, they thought they were like, is this god or is this this trouble? We'll just make them like a dance. Yeah, like, you know, what somebody comes out like, what's the song?
Like, and they're just... Now... Just move anybody who's dancing and singing. It's pop.
It's getting pop. Yeah, but like... It's like, like, a murder, it's pop. Right?
So it's interesting though, because I don't have a map in front of me nor am I any kind of geographical... But you have a map behind you. But at these places, it's still on the distance. Go find a map.
So you need to find Erfurt, Germany, and then Arnstapp. Remember that? I think that was on Germany. But that's where they danced to.
These kids straight up boogieed on down the Arnstapp. I want to know how far we got this. Erfurt, Germany to Arnstapp. Is that how you pronounce that?
Arnstapp. I'm not German. I don't think of this. Erfurt, Germany just exists to...
I don't know how to do that. Arnstapp. Sorry guys, I'm really geographically challenged. It's a real thing.
I don't know where Germany is. Okay, wait. So it's about... In case you're curious, it's a four hour and two minute walk.
It's the whole way. I wonder if they had a kungalang going. Yeah, straight up they danced from Erfurt to Arnstapp. Look at that.
I googled them out to the walking guy. It's a 25 minute drive, but it's a four hour and two minute walk. So in case you're curious, they danced straight for... Why was that their invocation?
It's my curious. My curiosity. My curiosity. Right.
Oh, the magic wheat. And the children, when they got to Arnstapp, they were gathered up and returned to their parents. Can you imagine Matt, if you're like a town's like king and you're like on your horse watching the hill and you see a hundred children just doing the wobble, doing the doggy, all the way to... Gavin, walking down the stream.
A bunch of weird-ass kids, like, you know, people on, like, fucking kids. Right, like what the fuck? So some of the children died shortly thereafter and it is said the rest lived out their lives with a tremor that would not go away. But these kids still couldn't stop moving.
They were all on drugs period saying now I'm leaving the fullest drugs. What were y'all smoking? This is a lot better than that, like, Alec Cocker-Dilly shit that people are taking now that make you eat people's faces and that's all. I'd rather kids dance until they just expire than eat people.
I'm not even interested. Which one? Yeah, no drugs are good, but I would rather drugs that make someone dance than rip someone's face off of the teeth. Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah. What kids are doing these days is just stupid. Yeah, it's just unbelievable. Matt, that wasn't the last of it.
Like I said, a few of these instances happened throughout. What's happening in Germany? What's happening in Germany? They must have awesome underground music scene that we just don't know about.
I have a friend who's in Germany I'm asking about. Honestly, you need to. But in the 1300s, immediately after the black flag this happened again, the black death. This happened again.
So not the black flag, the black death. Men and women took to the streets and convulsively danced to everyone's horror. Like, we said this was not like fun, lying dancing, like, square dancing, not any of that cute dance. This was like people leaping.
We just picture making this. They were leaping about foaming at the mouth and appeared to be possessed. This is rabies. This is a straight up rabies.
Yeah, somebody picked some bad turns first. Turn up? Turn up. What?
No, no, it just, it just stuck up and watching it. So I haven't let it, not record without us talking. Okay, so, yeah, this was swear they were foaming at the mouth. They were leaping and jumping, like it scared people on that.
Like, people were actually like, what the fuck? What the hell happened to you? Like, what is going on? It was spreading around like people were like, passing it on.
Like, people were like, joining in. I'd be like, fuck, are y'all doing it? You imagine if you went down there with your buddy and they were like, oh yeah, I'm about to just go check it out and then you get up and you're like, oh my god, these dancing. Right, like, wait a minute.
This would be frightening, Matt. If I saw your ass moment at the mouth leaping around, I'd call the doctor. Yeah, I'd call somebody. Right?
And even, like, in the streets, people were swaddling these people and trying to, like, bear hug them and sit them down so they'd rest. And they would recover for a short amount of time and just, like, rally bounce back up and start dancing again. And this would straight up kill people. Like, their feet would be bleeding till there were nubs.
They would pass out from exhaustion and heart attacks. And victims claimed the victims who survived that during the Dancing Fits, Matt, they were clueless so they were surrounding. They fucking glacked out and just danced. I know you've been there before.
I can't say I'm not with them in some level. I have been flapped out and dancing at the same time. But not for like a month. So go exclusively.
Now, they heard nothing. They saw nothing and they were compelled to move about screaming and dancing until they would pass out from total exhaustion is what the victims reported when they were questioned later about why the fuck they were dancing with foam in the mouth. So that was their response. They said they just black the hell out.
Don't remember a thing and just wanted to dance. Hey, well, they got that done. They did, Matt. They did.
I wish I had been invited to this party. Right. You got to go to Germany. We got to figure out.
Germany's still selling these kind of drugs. I got to see what's going on. Something's in the water, I think, is really what's going on. But that was our WTH3 for today.
I hope it inspires you to get up, get moving, but not for that long. Take some breaks, sit down. If your feet start to bleed. You can't be doing that.
You can't be having bloody feet in the dance floor. That's no fun for anyone. I don't understand where they weren't. Just like, yo, yo, yo, chill.
Cut it off, man. Cut the music out. Cut it off, man. Cut it off, man.
But I'm telling you, this would be a hell lot nicer than the things that people do nowadays, man. I'd much rather see a flash mob in the middle of the street than craziness that's been going on. So, Germany, let us know what you, what's in the water. Maybe not to the extent, but give us a little sprinkle.
Maybe that would help some people out. But if you like our show, please go check out our Patreon page. We would love the support. It's a little dollar a day.
It gets the dancing away. It's the dancing away. It's the dancing away. Wait, no.
We need that in there. We got a box on there. It's a dollar a month. Not a day.
So, dollar a month. What? What? It runs a month.
I might be one of those. It doesn't have one. Let us know, guys. Let us know.
But a dollar a month could get you a cute, goody bag. We sent them out this past week. I've seen pictures of them. We're loving that people have received them.
Thank you so much for supporting our show. If you like to hear more at WTH3s or if you have a suggestion for a ridiculous, ridiculous, ridiculous situation, you want us to cover it on these little tidbits. Let us know, my friends. Let us know.
And with that. We'll see you next week. If you have any awesome WTH3s or anything that you want us to talk about, we just got a great suggestion from one of our fans. We're going to be doing the episode with our next week.
Yes. So, keep it listen, keep a lookout. We hope you guys have one for us today. Bye.
Oh, well.
