A glittering statue, stirring music and a watching crowd make compromise seem small and respectable. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refuse to worship the image, because God alone deserves their worship, even if He does not rescue them. God preserves them in the furnace and sends an angel to be with them. Jesus bears God’s judgement in place of His people, who repeatedly bow to other things, and gives them life and peace.
