Daniel Coronell on dating Duque's sister, unmasking Uribe, Petro's problems & Vicky Dávila's Semana
from The Corrigan Cast · host Brendan Corrigan
Renowned Colombian journalist Daniel Coronell joins us for a discussion ranging from the Hispanic influence in US politics and an "exclusive" revelation of his love affair with President Iván Duque's sister to the need for a strong centrist candidate to emerge ahead of next year's presidential election in Colombia and his controversial leaving of Semana magazine. Before delving into Colombian politics, Coronell gives us his reaction to Joe Biden's winning of the White House and why it's wrong to view Latino voters in the US as a homogeneous block. As for matters in his homeland, the Miami-based Bogotano is less than impressed with President Iván Duque's performance and reveals, somewhat embarrassingly considering his political outlook, that he once dated Duque's sister. Looking ahead to Colombia's 2022 presidential election, Coronell explains why he hopes it doesn't become a left-right shoot-out as it did in 2018. If it does, he fears that what he calls former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez's 'puppet candidate' will win again. With that in mind, he stresses the importance of an appealing centrist candidate — not Sergio Farjado, by the way — to emerge in the coming months. Finally, he talks about his departure from Semana in April 2020 after 15 years as a columnist with the publication and he finishes up with some sound advice for budding journalists. ***** Watch a video version of this podcast at https://youtu.be/ZsWTBwGXRXY. ***** Check out the Wrong Way Corrigan blog at https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/. ***** Outro music: Master of the Feast by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1400019 Artist: http://incompetech.com/
