"Suddenly we were on the brink of a chasm in the railroad, since known as the 'Deep Cut'". Although they were new to Rodes' division, Daniels Brigade proved their worth on the afternoon of July 1, 1863 as the Confederate forces began to unhinge the Union line northwest of town.
