August 1990. Gainesville, Florida. As students returned for the fall semester, a killer began stalking the apartments surrounding the University of Florida. Within four terrifying days, five young people—Sonja Larson, Christina Powell, Christa Hoyt, Tracy Paules, and Manuel “Manny” Taboada—were murdered inside their homes. The crime scenes were not only brutal. They were deliberately staged. The killer broke into apartments, attacked his victims with a knife, and carefully positioned some of their bodies to shock whoever discovered them. Fear swept through Gainesville as students reinforced their doors, carried weapons, slept in groups, or fled the city altogether. No one knew where the killer would strike next. Suspicion initially fell on another young man, whose behavior and troubled history made him an easy target. But while investigators searched for answers, the real killer was already in custody on an unrelated robbery charge. His name was Danny Rolling. A drifter from Louisiana with a violent past, Rolling eventually pleaded guilty to the five Gainesville murders. He also confessed to killing three members of the Grissom family in Shreveport, although he was never tried for those deaths.
