Darcy, 34, from Halifax in Yorkshire and The Humber, wanted to train as a nurse to serve her community in one of England's most deprived areas. But Health Education England's training budget was deliberately constrained by HM Treasury, treating healthcare investment as a cost to minimise rather than the means by which qualified nurses reach understaffed wards. The training places existed. People like Darcy were ready to fill them. What was missing was a central government willing to fund the posts that communities desperately need. This is her story of how Westminster's spending choices blocked her path into healthcare when her region needed her most.
