In our second, long-awaited DARK NOTES episode, we put historian Stephen Fox's WOLF OF THE DEEP through the HotH2OHistory wringer. Part biography of the intrepid Raphael Semmes, part account of his exploits as the captain of the feared C.S.S. Alabama, Fox recounts the adventures of the raider, his crew, and the ship that made Union vessels shudder during the Civil War. Where it gets spicy is when Fox, as a Yankee historian, cannot shake the inevitable condemnation of the South and even Semmes for their efforts in the war. After all, the worst, absolute worst thing an Ivy League historian can espouse is sympathy for the South and thus, racism. Because we all know with what unassailable virtue the North started and carried out the war...Oak Parker sort of listen to candidates for village president--there's only one real sane choice, so inevitably they will pick the alternative.
