Dashakam 064 Crowning as Govinda

from Srimad Narayaneeyam · host Santana Dharma The Life

In Narayaneeyam, Dashakam 64 is devoted to the coronation of Krishna as Govinda. This Dashakam narrates how, after witnessing Krishna's divine feats such as lifting Govardhana Hill, the cowherds (Gopas) acknowledge Krishna as the supreme Lord of the universe. To confirm this, Krishna's horoscope is examined by Sage Garga, reaffirming his divine status from infancy. This leads the Gopas to deepen their reverence and love for him.Indra, the king of gods, humbled after his defeat by Krishna, comes to earth with his divine cow Kamadhenu. In a symbolic act of respect, Indra places his jeweled crown at Krishna's lotus feet. Kamadhenu then performs anointing (abhishekam) with milk, bestowing the name "Govinda" upon Krishna. Indra also brings the celestial elephant Airavata carrying Ganga water to ceremonially anoint Krishna, acknowledging him as the sovereign lord. The Dasakam highlights Krishna's established sovereignty over the three worlds and the prosperity and bliss his grace brings to Gokulam, making it likened to Vaikuntha, the divine abode. It portrays the adoration of Krishna by celestial beings and his devotees, emphasizing the divine recognition of Krishna's supreme status and his loving relationship with his devotees. This chapter reflects both the majesty and the intimate, accessible nature of Krishna as Govinda—the protector and beloved lord of the cows and cowherds, of the universe, and of devoted souls.Namaskarams and Dhanyavadaha to Smt Savithri Ramesh and Smt Asha Murarka for their help.
