Datchet Diamonds - Richard Marsh

from Datchet Diamonds · host Richard Marsh

Oh dear! The Duchess of Datchet's diamonds, worth a quarter of a million pounds, have been stolen. Just as Mr. Paxton, a ne'er do well gambler planning to leave the country to escape his losses, reads this news item on a train, he overhears, in the next compartment, the actual thief boasting of his accomplishment. Then, when he arrives at his hotel and opens his Gladstone bag, he finds the bag is not his -- and it contains the spoils of the robbery! Will our hero take them directly to the magistrate and tell all he knows? Or will things take another turn, leading to brigands, danger, and possibly romance? - Summary by Jacquerie

The FBI's hunt for the leak led to an astonishing discovery—the mole was one of its own, special agent Robert Hanssen. For two decades, Hanssen masqueraded as a devoted patriot while ruthlessly selling out his country, trading classified intelligence to the Soviet Union and later Russia, in exchange for cash and diamonds. He was a whirlwind of contradictions—a self-proclaimed patriot and a traitor; a family man who sexually betrayed his wife; an ardent man of God and a sinner. Through interviews with Hanssen’s family, friends, and colleagues, CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett (Host of “The Takeout”) delves into the double life of Robert Hanssen and unravels the chilling truth about the most damaging spy in FBI history in “Agent of Betrayal: The Double Life of Robert Hanssen”. Centaurians by L. D. Biagi Loyal Books Published in 1911, 15 years before the first verified discovery of the North Pole and in the same year when F. Cook published a memoir claiming his own discovery of the Pole, this short SciFi about the discovery of the Pole and the civilisation on the other side which is supposedly 6 centuries in advance compared to our own, was doomed to sink in the unknown from the beginning on. But reading it a century later, this SciFi shows its own charm by conveying the general sentiment in the society short before the big discovery and the motivation behind the continued exploration despite the associated hardships. Some predictions, such as the manmade diamonds, even came true very recently, while some others are overtaken by the real advancement in science already. - Summary by gyllila The Albert Gate Mystery by Louis Tracy Mentor New York A new case for barrister and hobby detective Reginald Brett: The imperial diamonds were sent by the Sultan to London, to be cut in Albert Gate mansion by experts, all the while under the especial protection of the British government. One morning, however, the Turkish officials are found dead in the house, and the diamonds have vanished - despite the strict measures taken to protect them. The first suspicion falls on Jack Talbot, a young secretary at the Foreign Office, in whose charge this mission was, because he also disappeared without a trace on the same evening. Convinced that Talbot is innocent, his friend Lord Fairholme turns to Reginald Brett for help... (Summary by Carolin)
