Dating a Sociopath: How I Fell for ASPD Manipulation - Riley's Story

from 7 On Sundays™ Podcast · host Stephanie Boye & Dr. Chez Leeby

Dating a sociopath is more common than you think. Riley shares her story of manipulation, ASPD red flags, and healing from toxic love. Dating a sociopath, antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), and spotting red flags in relationships are at the heart of this powerful episode. Sociopaths are often intelligent, charming, and manipulative — making it extremely difficult to recognize them in the early stages of dating. ASPD is a serious mental health condition defined by patterns of deceit, impulsivity, aggression, irresponsibility, and lack of remorse. While statistics suggest only 1–4% of people meet the criteria, experts believe the numbers are higher, as sociopaths often resist therapy and avoid formal diagnosis. According to psychiatrist David J. Lieberman, sociopaths "struggle with maintaining the impression they create and project to the world," often layering lies upon lies to manipulate others. Our guest Riley, a college freshman, shares her personal story of dating someone with ASPD. She reveals how easily these individuals can enter your inner circle, how manipulation and mistrust take root, and how painful the healing process can be after the truth emerges. This episode is a must-listen for anyone wondering: What are the signs of a sociopath? What does dating someone with ASPD look like? How can you protect yourself from manipulation in relationships? Riley's story is a reminder that sociopaths don't just exist in movies — they are more common than we think, and anyone can fall victim. If you suspect you may be in a relationship with someone who has ASPD, know that you are not alone and support is available.
