Dave: Gotta Go
from The Volume Knob · host Conseil Keith Serry Inc.
David is one of the most enthusiastic and openhearted members of the New York storytelling community I've had the opportunity to work with. He's also TIRELESS. You can see his work everywhere, from The Moth, to Awkward Teenage Years. You can read him and his work here! His site includes many examples of his writing (and some pictures of Dave during his shaved-head hardcore phase). You can also follow him on youtube and instagram. Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net. And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at [email protected].

What this episode covers
Dave was the only Chinese kid in his predominantly black and hispanic high school in the Bronx, but that wasn't the only reason he felt like an outsider. His clothes: the crew neck sweaters and beige corduroys he got using his sister's Gap employee discount made him feel awkward and alone. The solution? A trip with his sister to the Village to pick up baggy jeans and Air Force Ones. He came home looking like a "fucking homeless astronaut". And it worked, for awhile. He found new friends and a different sense of purpose; until it all soured one night outside a nightclub in Manhattan. The story of what happens next, sound tracked by 80s hardcore legends Agnostic Front, is about the many layers of belonging.
