David admitted his sin and wanted the consequences to affect him and not others as much as was possible. Then when he found the place to build the temple, he didn’t want it to be given to him as a gift, he wanted to pay a good price to Oman for it. And when God told him he couldn’t be the one to build the temple, he accepted that and went on to spend a fortune amassing the materials for his son to build it.
